"When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us."
-- Alexander Graham Bell

After thinking I had completed my studies at university, I pursued a career with the federal department of health for 13 years. I worked in various capacities in Child Care Programs, the Community Action Program for Children, and the Primary Health Care Transition Fund. For a period of 8 years, I worked in First Nations and Inuit health. During that time, I had the privilege of travelling extensively throughout the Canadian Arctic (Northwest Territories and Nunavut). This was a wonderful opportunity to bear witness to a different worldview: not only a unique way of seeing the world, but also a distinct way of being in the world.

While employed with the government, I lived with chronic pain on a daily basis. I had sustained injuries in a serious fall within days of signing my first contract with the government. In 2002, a colleague referred me to a wonderful healer in Ottawa. This was my first introduction to energy healing and I began to experience improvements following only a few treatments. I was ecstatic to see the shifts that had occurred. However, my family and I relocated to the east coast while the work was still in progress. Despite my new-found energy and optimism, at our last meeting the healer warned that I would soon have an experience that would shake me to the very core of my being.

Six weeks after our move, I was in a car accident. Three years of unremitting pain, disability, and unemployment followed, giving me endless time for reflection and introspection. Many times I wished for everything to end. I felt betrayed by conventional Western medicine as the doctors seemed unable to help me. I was angry and frustrated and blamed others. Tests were inconclusive, medication provided little relief, and the medical system seemed intent on seeing the reasons for my continued lack of progress as my failure.

A series of serendipitous and synchronistic events led me to so-called alternative methods of healing. Through the use of several techniques, I overcame chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, asthma, and allergies through energy-based healing. Desiring to make meaning of my experiences, I decided to go back to school to study social work so that I could help others and advocate for change within the healthcare system.

A simple accident was an incredibly transformative experience which helped propel me into a journey of healing and self-awareness, spiritual awakening, and personal transformation. We need to pay attention to the messages we receive as our attention is always demanded. At times we must plunge to the very depths of darkness in order to see our way through and emerge into the light. By surrendering to my experience and accepting it for what it was without judgement, I was able to move through it. I clung to the past until I realized that only through turning away from it could I avail myself of future possibilities. It is only through overcoming our fears and embracing the unknown that we can soar like Jonathan Livingston Seagull, for the path to freedom is an inner journey of finding and embodying authenticity in our lives.

Like so many, I had gotten out of balance in life, particularly in my work which required that I spend most of my time using analytical skills. We live in a world which overemphasizes the left brain and denies the incredible creative and intuitive gifts of the right brain. Sadly, our culture is an expression of the destructiveness of this very imbalance which manifests in myriad ways in people’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lives.

Since 2005, I have been working with others to overcome their physical and emotional pain, trauma, and challenges. I continue to explore various modalities in my search to find techniques that facilitate the process of transformation. As I continue on my journey, I have been blessed to work with so many incredible people. Every interaction with another is an exercise in reflecting self/other as teacher/student, and a meeting of souls.

My current research is focusing on social workers’ experiences integrating energy techniques into their practice. I have also presented on the use of energy healing in professional practice at various conferences in Canada the US, and have given talks and demonstrations in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

"May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector for those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need.
"
